Are You Digitizing Your Watercolor Artwork?! #artistsonetsy #artbusiness #watercolor #watercolorbusiness #creativebiz #creative

Wondering how to make more money with your artwork? Turns out, it’s pretty simple!

Let’s get right to it! You know that if you’re a watercolor artist with a dream of creating art for a living, then I’m going to encourage you to follow that dream! I’m always here pumping out weekly tips, guides, checklists and more to help you go from part-time hobbyist to full-fledged creative business owner who knows how to make more money with your artwork.

It turns out a big part of going from one-off originals or commissions to actually scaling your business and making money is knowing how to digitize your watercolor artwork.

But I know it isn’t always easy to learn a brand new software or stick with it. However, after talking to my most successful students I pulled together three reasons you should consider digitizing as a critical part of your business strategy.

#1 – Your Time Is Limited and So Is Your Earning Potential

Hands in the air if you’re totally sick of hearingyou have the same number of hours in a day as Beyonce”. Yeah I get it, the Queen B is a boss lady and totally killing it. But she’s also able to scale her empire because she has a full team behind her. People who work for her, market her, style her, promote her and help her shine. And there’s nothing wrong with that! But it’s important to remember that you can’t accomplish the same type of outcomes if you don’t have that kind of support behind you. (And let’s be real, most of us don’t).

That said, having that team behind her means her time is freed up to do other things. How does that even relate to you and your watercolor practice?

You have one set of two hands, that’s it. That means you can work on one piece of art at a time. Sure, you can always create original artwork, or complete a commission for a customer, but it’s a one-at-a-time kind of deal, right?

When you know how to digitize your artwork, that limit is no longer on you. You can create a piece of art, scan and digitize it, then turn it into endless formats like art prints, stationery, greeting cards, fabric, wallpaper, you name it!

You make it once, and then you profit off of it every time that you’re able to format and sell it for a new purpose! That’s how you make more money with your artwork

Pretty sweet deal, huh?

#2 – It Can Open Up Doors to Other Creative Outlets

If you’re like many of the creatives I know, you’re multi-passionate. You love creating original art, but you also love decorating your home, gardening, or tackling new DIY projects. I get that!

What’s incredible is that when you know how to digitize your artwork and apply it to other items and formats, a whole new world opens up allowing you to create unique collections and product lines.

Have you ever considered how perfect your floral paintings might be for a boutique collection of linen pillows?! Or how much people would love to have their pet portrait on a tea towel or blanket? There are so many applications and forms your art can take – the sky is truly the limit.

#3 – It Can Lead to Collaborations that Expand Your Influence

So let me tell you a quick story! When I learned to digitize my artwork, it meant that I could apply it to stylish stock photos and mockups that really let my artwork shine. I didn’t have to worry so much about photography or the best lighting to capture my art. That meant I could share a lot more confidently on Instagram.

That said, being on Instagram and sharing my work meant that a lot more eyes were seeing it. Surprisingly enough, a local company saw my work on Instagram and contacted me about teaching pop-up workshops! I met with the CEO of SkillPop and the next month I was teaching my first SkillPop class.

If I hadn’t been digitizing my work, I’d probably have posted far fewer photos because I was so worried about having “perfect” imagery. And I wasn’t confident that I could achieve “perfection” by photographing, editing and strategizing for every. single. piece. of artwork I created. So if I hadn’t been showing up the way that I was, I probably wouldn’t have made much of an impression on SkillPop (or anyone else!)

By digitizing my work with a scanner and a few quick edits in Photoshop, I could easily add my art to beautiful mockups. I was confident in sharing it, and showed up consistently. SkillPop found me and felt like I would be a great candidate for teaching – all because of digitizing!

It’s really hard to say who might see your work and want to collaborate. But knowing that you can confidently show up online with visuals that represent your work is a big part of making things happen in your business!

So what about you?

Do any of these reasons resonate with you?

I wanna get real clear on your reasoning behind why you want to run a successful art-based business. Dig deep and truly figure out why you would want to be a creative business owner. Can digitizing help you make more money with your artwork? You might realize at the end of the day that digitizing isn’t for you, and that’s okay!

But if you decide that it IS something you’re interested in, I’m here to walk this journey with you!

So let me know… what’s your personal WHY for wanting to be an artistic entrepreneur? Why are YOU interested in digitizing and scaling your work beyond one-off creations?
